According to these charts and maps, it looks like the Union attempted to flank the Confederacy so that they could get deeper into the South to end the war quickly. However, the Confederate army stood its ground thanks to General Thomas Jackson. Because of this, the Union failed to seize this area of Virginia and allowed Confederate morale to soar, for this was their first real victory against the North. Because of this battle, General Jackson earned the nickname "Stonewall".
